Background of the Study
Hausa, a major language of Northern Nigeria, exhibits a rich tapestry of syntactic structures shaped by historical, cultural, and social influences. In traditional Hausa communities, syntactic variations have evolved over centuries, reflecting shifts in communication practices and social organization (Sani, 2023). Diachronic analysis reveals changes in sentence structure, word order, and grammatical markers, often influenced by contact with other regional languages and internal developments. Oral traditions and early written records provide a window into these historical syntactic forms. Recent studies suggest that traditional speech maintains features that are gradually lost in urban settings due to modernization and globalization (Ibrahim, 2024; Bello, 2025). This research aims to examine the syntactic variations within traditional Hausa communities, documenting changes over time and assessing their cultural significance in preserving linguistic identity.
Statement of the Problem
Despite extensive research on Hausa, diachronic syntactic variations in traditional communities remain underexplored. Many studies focus on contemporary urban speech, neglecting the rich syntactic heritage preserved in rural areas (Sani, 2023). The lack of comprehensive data on historical syntax hinders our understanding of language evolution and cultural continuity among Hausa speakers (Ibrahim, 2024). Addressing this gap is crucial for documenting linguistic diversity and supporting preservation efforts.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it illuminates the evolution of syntactic structures in traditional Hausa, contributing to our understanding of language change and cultural preservation. By documenting diachronic syntactic variations, the research will support linguistic theory, inform language teaching, and aid policymakers in preserving the linguistic heritage of Hausa communities.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses exclusively on traditional Hausa communities and their syntactic variations, not addressing urban or non-syntactic aspects.
